Workshop Introduction

A skills-based intensive workshop based on methods used to get ordinary people involved in their communities. Course overview: This workshop will focus on how to write and submit a proposal to an international grant making foundation for a specific nonprofit NGO project. First we focus on doing research and getting information on foundations and the actual process. Then we focus exclusively on the step-by-step writing of the grant proposal. Each participant will come out of the workshop with a completed proposal outline. This will be an interactive workshop aimed at people with little or no experience writing project or funding proposals. Participants will be divided into project groups in order to create complete proposals.

Participants may write proposals for their own real projects or nonprofit organizations but are not limited to this. This class is open to anyone with an interest in grant proposal writing and is not limited to nonprofit-NGO staff and volunteers.

Purpose

Develop a more critical understanding of socially determined gender roles & the changing position of women.

Develop a broader awareness of global issues and methods for solving problems.

Overview

The class focuses on the gender aspects of a wide range of issues, starting by looking at the status of women in Japan and then changing focus to looking at the connection of gender to key social issues such as education, health, pay equity, government policy and home violence. Weekly online reading assignments introduce background information and data. The topics selected for this course reflect issues of current international interest. This class is for anyone wanting to know more about gender equality and/or the social pressures that define gender roles. Prior knowledge of issues is not necessary to join this class. This course is designed for those persons who have upper-intermediate or advanced level of English ability.

Basics
Long history, not just in the US
Can include many types of activities
Direct action is one type of community organizing
Direct action organizing has roots in rights movements

Community organization is that process by which the people...organize themselves to 'take charge' of their situation and thus develop a sense of being a community together. It is a particularly effective tool for the poor and powerless as they determine for themselves the actions they will take to deal with the essential forces that are destroying their community and consequently causing them to be powerless.

Community organizing and DAO aims to:
Win concrete improvements in people’s lives.
Make people aware of their own power.
Alter relations of power

Key elements:
Collective action by those directly affected.
Only the people affected can make change happen.
Changing basic power relationships the only way to change conditions.

Underlying Assumptions
Government needs to be accountable to the people
People have the right to speak or act on social and political issues. (freedom of speech, assembly, thought etc.)
People need to keep the government in check.

Why DAO?
Other means have not worked thus far.
People in power do not listen or will not make changes.
Every person has power: electoral, consumer, legal, and/disruptive.

Organizing is about understanding and using power to bring about change

STEP 1 Review the problem
Breakdown of cause and effect
Gather information

Step 2. Develop your issue
Problems are wide and vague - Issues have concrete objectives, alter relations of power because in DAO people use their power.

Step 3. Strategy development
Five key questions to answer:
What are your goals?
What are your organization’s strengths and weaknesses?
Who cares about this?
Who has the power to give you what you want?
What tactics can you use to apply your power to the target? What will make the target aware of your power to give you what you want?

Sometimes this requires many meetings and many rounds of negotiation

In this workshop we will review the whole cycle of volunteer management – needs assessment organizational policy, job description design, recruitment/input, orientation and training, monitoring, motivation and retention as well as the challenges we face. This workshop will include a combination of lecture, discussion and group exercises with the expectation that each person will come out of the workshop with some concrete ideas for how to better recruit, motivate and work with volunteers. Participants with diverse experience and field of work are welcome to join this workshop.

It is a particularly effective tool for the poor and powerless as they determine for themselves the actions they will take to deal with the essential forces that are destroying their community and consequently causing them to be powerless.
