It is a particularly effective tool for the poor and powerless as they determine for themselves the actions they will take to deal with the essential forces that are destroying their community and consequently causing them to be powerless.&lt;br /&gt;-Reverend Robert Linthicum, World Vision International&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Community organizing and DAO aims to:&lt;br /&gt;Win concrete improvements in people’s lives.&lt;br /&gt;Make people aware of their own power.&lt;br /&gt;Alter relations of power&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Key elements:&lt;br /&gt;Collective action by those directly affected.&lt;br /&gt;Only the people affected can make change happen.&lt;br /&gt;Changing basic power relationships the only way to change conditions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Underlying Assumptions&lt;br /&gt;Government needs to be accountable to the people&lt;br /&gt;People have the right to speak or act on social and political issues. (freedom of speech, assembly, thought etc.)&lt;br /&gt;People need to keep the government in check.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Why DAO?&lt;br /&gt;Other means have not worked thus far.&lt;br /&gt;People in power do not listen or will not make changes.&lt;br /&gt;Every person has power: electoral, consumer, legal, and/disruptive.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Organizing is about understanding and using power to bring about change&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;STEP 1 Review the problem&lt;br /&gt;Breakdown of cause and effect&lt;br /&gt;Gather information&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Step 2. Develop your issue&lt;br /&gt;Problems are wide and vague - Issues have concrete objectives, alter relations of power because in DAO people use their power.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Step 3. Strategy development&lt;br /&gt;Five key questions to answer:&lt;br /&gt;What are your goals?&lt;br /&gt;What are your organization’s strengths and weaknesses?&lt;br /&gt;Who cares about this?&lt;br /&gt;Who has the power to give you what you want?&lt;br /&gt;What tactics can you use to apply your power to the target? What will make the target aware of your power to give you what you want?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Strategy development 1&lt;br /&gt;Goals:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Strategy development 2 Organizational Considerations:&lt;br /&gt;Resources you have&lt;br /&gt;How your organization can be strengthened by the campaign&lt;br /&gt;Internal Problems to Overcome&lt;br /&gt;Use a SWOT to consider Internal and external issues&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Strategy development 3&lt;br /&gt;List people and groups involved, by category&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Strategy development 4 List your targets:&lt;br /&gt;Who has the power to give you what you want?&lt;br /&gt;Primary targets the power to make the decision, be specific&lt;br /&gt;Secondary targets: people with influence over the decision makers&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Strategy development 5 Define your Tactics&lt;br /&gt;How to apply pressure: Specific activities through which you implement your strategy&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Step 4 Face your target&lt;br /&gt;Personalized&lt;br /&gt;Open hearing, meeting: public, get media attention, on the record&lt;br /&gt;To be successful you need to understand what power you have over them – what kind of power do you have, can you use?&lt;br /&gt;Always leave with something concrete: a decision, a second meeting, etc.&lt;br /&gt;Always confirm next steps.&lt;br /&gt;Secondary action can force the person to act&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Step 5 Decision maker reacts&lt;br /&gt;You must must have a plan to react as well&lt;br /&gt;Get what you want or not&lt;br /&gt;Sometimes this requires many meetings and many rounds of negotiation&lt;br /&gt;*Part of a whole campaign not a one-shot event&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;6. Goal setting:&lt;br /&gt; What do you hope to achieve?&lt;br /&gt; What do you want people to do?&lt;br /&gt; How many people/how much money etc.&lt;br /&gt;2. TARGET AUDIENCE INTEREST ANALYSIS&lt;br /&gt; Defining who you are looking to attract.&lt;br /&gt;3. Create a message for them will appeal to them&lt;br /&gt;4. Opening discussion: WHAT IS IT?&lt;br /&gt;Community organization is that process by which the people...organize themselves to 'take charge' of their situation and thus develop a sense of being a community together. It is a particularly effective tool for the poor and powerless as they determine for themselves the actions they will take to deal with the essential forces that are destroying their community and consequently causing them to be powerless. &lt;br /&gt;- Robert Linthicum, World Vision International&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Key elements:&lt;br /&gt; Collective action by those directly affected.&lt;br /&gt; People affected can bring about sustainable change.&lt;br /&gt; Changing basic power relationships is necessary.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Understanding power: what power do we have and how can we use it?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. Organizing STEPS to overview&lt;br /&gt;1. People (members) identify a problem&lt;br /&gt;2. Turn the problem into an issue&lt;br /&gt;3. Develop a logical strategy&lt;br /&gt;Tactics VS. strategy&lt;br /&gt;Planning&lt;br /&gt;5 questions to answer in order to develop your strategy&lt;br /&gt;1.What are your goals?&lt;br /&gt;2.What are your organization’s strengths and weaknesses?&lt;br /&gt;3.Who cares about this?
